WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAND OVER A LONG-RUNNING, EMMY-WINNING TV SERIES TO FIVE AMBITIOUS MEDIA STUDENTS? THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE GOING TO FIND OUT, AS PART OF OUR BOLDEST, MOST INSPIRING EXPERIMENT YET.
Prosper Median Group, Inc, based in Lexington, Kentucky, is shaking things up with its acclaimed educational series kNOwMORE. For the first time in the show’s 14-year history, the entire production, from story selection and scripting to filming and editing, has been placed in the hands of five students from three different media programs in Central Kentucky.
This marks the official launch of a new student-led initiative that aims to bridge the gap between real-world storytelling and social impact and develop a partnership with regional universities.
Executive producer Kyle Lake says his team wanted to try something fun and he hopes VERY educational. “This is the kick-off to what we hope is a continuing program that attracts current and recently graduated students from higher education institutions in central Kentucky and perhaps state-wide eventually.”
The kNOwMORE educational series, airing weekly on PBS affiliate KETKY began in 2011. The unique series aims to provide audiences with a look at what would happen WITHOUT nonprofit, community and charitable programs located throughout the Commonwealth. We recognize that without this work the health and stability of our communities would be at risk. “Our goal is to motivate people to find their passion for helping.”
In this particular episode our student team have selected to do stories about groups providing immigration and refugee services in Kentucky and will feature stories from Louisville’s Catholic Charities Summer Youth Program and the Americana Community Center; as well as Neighbors Immigration Clinic in Lexington.
Catholic Charities of Louisville Migration and Refugee Services Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) “welcomes the stranger” with open arms, helping those escaping persecution begin new lives with dignity. Our multilingual, multicultural staff offers comprehensive services and begins assisting refugee clients pre-arrival by finding suitable housing and stocking the home with food and furnishings. Families are helped every step of the way to adjust to their new homes. This includes assisting with employment search and placement, school registration, and English language training.
American Community Center Americana Community Center’s mission is to provide holistic services to Louisville’s refugee, immigrant and underserved population to build strong and healthy families, create a safe and supportive community and help every individual realize their potential. We help bridge the gap from surviving to thriving through education, family support, youth achievement, and career & financial development.
Neighbors Immigration Clinic We are a non-profit law firm providing low cost legal services to our immigrant neighbors. Our mission is to educate the community on the immigration journey and advocate for immigrant rights.
